SUMMARY:Halt the Hike Poster Making Session
DESCRIPTION:Halt the Hike Poster-Making & Info Session\nThursday\, March 21st\n11AM – 3PM\nAPIRG Office (9111 HUB Mall) \nCome on out to learn about proposed tuition increases at the University of Alberta and make a poster to voice your concerns with the proposed tuition increases. Poster-making materials and snacks will be provided. \nHere’s a brief history of tuition increases and just some of its impacts on students in recent years: \n\n\nIn 2022 the University of Alberta passed a series of exceptional tuition increases where undergraduate students experienced tuition increases ranging from 16% – 44% and graduate students experienced increases ranging from 23 – 104% depending on their program of study.\nIn March 2023 the University of Alberta approved a further tuition increase of 5.6% and 6.5% for domestic and international students\, respectively.\nIn December 2023\, the University of Alberta proposed yet another tuition increase of 2% for domestic students (in 2024/25) and 5% increase for international students (in 2025/26).\nLast semester the Campus Food Bank saw a 50% increase in client visits compared to Fall 2022.\nBased on surveys completed last spring 20% of the Campus Food Bank’s student clients are still going hungry. With continued tuition increases in the midst of a cost of living crisis more and more students are being pushed into the group of 20% of food bank clients who despite accessing the campus food bank are still unable to cover the cost of the rest of their food intake and go hungry.\n\nAll the while President Bill Flangan is jet setting around Europe and hosting extravagant donor dinners with $311.15 plates per person\, and when asked about this at a Town Hall in January Deputy Provost of Students and Enrollment\, Melissa Padfield\, kindly reminded us all that all of Bill’s expenses are disclosed on the University of Alberta’s website: Check it out here! ;) \nThe vote for the new proposed tuition increases will take place on Friday\, March 22nd at 8AM.
