SUMMARY:Halt the Hike Poster Making Session
DESCRIPTION:Halt the Hike Poster-Making & Info Session\nThursday\, March 21st\n11AM – 3PM\nAPIRG Office (9111 HUB Mall) \nCome on out to learn about proposed tuition increases at the University of Alberta and make a poster to voice your concerns with the proposed tuition increases. Poster-making materials and snacks will be provided. \nHere’s a brief history of tuition increases and just some of its impacts on students in recent years: \n\n\nIn 2022 the University of Alberta passed a series of exceptional tuition increases where undergraduate students experienced tuition increases ranging from 16% – 44% and graduate students experienced increases ranging from 23 – 104% depending on their program of study.\nIn March 2023 the University of Alberta approved a further tuition increase of 5.6% and 6.5% for domestic and international students\, respectively.\nIn December 2023\, the University of Alberta proposed yet another tuition increase of 2% for domestic students (in 2024/25) and 5% increase for international students (in 2025/26).\nLast semester the Campus Food Bank saw a 50% increase in client visits compared to Fall 2022.\nBased on surveys completed last spring 20% of the Campus Food Bank’s student clients are still going hungry. With continued tuition increases in the midst of a cost of living crisis more and more students are being pushed into the group of 20% of food bank clients who despite accessing the campus food bank are still unable to cover the cost of the rest of their food intake and go hungry.\n\nAll the while President Bill Flangan is jet setting around Europe and hosting extravagant donor dinners with $311.15 plates per person\, and when asked about this at a Town Hall in January Deputy Provost of Students and Enrollment\, Melissa Padfield\, kindly reminded us all that all of Bill’s expenses are disclosed on the University of Alberta’s website: Check it out here! ;) \nThe vote for the new proposed tuition increases will take place on Friday\, March 22nd at 8AM.

Let’s hang out and get to know APIRG. SUMMARY:SASV: Preventing Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence\, presented by the Saffron Centre
DESCRIPTION:In honour of Sexual & Gender-Based Violence Awareness Week\, Students Against Sexual Violence (SASV) welcome you to learn about Preventing Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence\, presented by @saffroncentre \nECHA 2-121\, Feb 3 12:00pm -1:00pm \nAs outlined by the Saffron Centre…\nThis presentation begins by defining ‘Technology Facilitated Sexual Violence’ and explores why and how sexual violence is so prevalent in the online world. We discuss various tactics commonly used by online offenders to harass\, manipulate\, & blackmail\, with an emphasis on sextortion\, grooming & luring. This presentation also discusses frequent exposure to pornography at a young age and the effects it can have on brain & relationship development. We then explore the world of ‘sexting’; discussing the current culture and “risks” surrounding sexting and providing practical recommendations in an attempt to make the behavior safer. Importantly\, we also discuss the legal ramifications surrounding non-consensual image sharing and ‘revenge porn.’ Lastly\, we address cyberstalking and provide students with various resources to help them navigate online harassment & violence\, as well as specific resources for removing intimate images from the internet \nPlease note that this event will be following COVID precautions

SUMMARY:Monday Media Club: Know Your Neighbours
DESCRIPTION:FREE\, drop-in event. \nThis week’s topic is exploring mutual aid\, community care and getting to know the people we are in community with. We don’t often get to choose who we live next to. However\, we do have the choice of how we interact with those around us. By starting to connect with our neighbours\, we can build relational skills and a network that will keep us safe throughout these uncertain times. \nQuestions we’ll explore: \n\nWhat are some effective ways to initiate contact with our neighbours?\nHow can we create a network of mutual aid among neighbours?\nWhat are some challenges we might face when trying to connect with our neighbours\, and how can we overcome them?\nHow can we ensure that our interactions with neighbours are respectful and considerate of their boundaries?\nIn your dream living situation\, what is your neighbourhood like?\n\nInstead of gathering around one book or resource\, we ask you to share an item of media that pertains to this month’s topic. No resource is too small\, weird\, or niche to be shared. Whatever it is\, whether it is a book\, a tik tok\, a zine\, an article\, or a clip from a reality show\, we want to see it. \nAll U of A students and community members are welcome. We are providing a space where you can exchange thoughts and resources with others. As a social justice and anti-oppression based organization\, our intention is to create an inclusive space for learning and community building. \nJoin us at APIRG’s office on February 10th to talk\, listen\, and share your thoughts & resources. Our office is located at 9111 HUB Mall. \nCan’t make it this month? Worry not! Monday Media Club is a recurring event that will be held throughout the semester – come join us March 10th and April 7th!
