APIRG IS HIRING

The Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG) is seeking a Temporary Employee for the Working Group Coordinator position.
APIRG is a student-run, student-funded, non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, advocacy, and action in the public interest. APIRG exists to provide students with resources to be active citizens, and wants you to get involved.

APIRG employees are hired directly by, and thus responsible to, the student-volunteer Board of Directors.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting Working Groups, including advocating on behalf of Working Groups, fostering self-sufficiency, tracking group information and status, updating related policy, attending events, and creating budget recommendations for presentation to the Board.
  2. Board support, including board development, facilitation of Board decision-making (e.g. by providing contextual and historical information), and attending some Board meetings.
  3. Volunteer management, including placement, orientation, supervision, evaluation and updating related policy.
  4. Designing, coordinating, and facilitating monthly programming events, including facilitating workshops or inviting guest facilitators.
  5. Overseeing bi-annual granting process for APIRG’s Working Group Fund.
  6. General office duties, including answering phones, greeting the public, updating portions of the APIRG website, maintaining a clean workspace, and attending regular staff meetings.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary education in a related field, or 2 to 3 years of equivalent experience
  2. Experience with event planning and execution
  3. Experience with public speaking
  4. Ability to perform self-motivated work, as well as work within teams

 

Assets:

  1. Experience with concepts of popular education
  2. Experience managing volunteers
  3. Training in consensus decision making
  4. In-depth understanding of anti-oppressive practices and structural accessibility
  5. Experience working in non-profit organizations
  6. Familiarity with U of A campus processes
  7. Familiarity with flat structure, non-hierarchical collaborative working structures
  8. Familiarity with Mac computers
  9. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite

APIRG is a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The ability to multi-task and to communicate effectively with coworkers, Board members, volunteers and the public is essential.

Terms: The successful candidate should expect to work approximately 26 flexible hours per week*, primarily during regular office hours. This position involves some duties outside of the office. Some evenings and weekend work required.
*26 hours per week is an average throughout the calendar year. Hours worked are higher during the post-secondary school terms, September – April, and decreased in the summer.

 

This temporary contract is a four month position from mid-August to mid-December.

Remuneration: APIRG is a unionized work environment in agreement with the University of Alberta Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).


Wage
: $16.51–in accordance with the NASA-APIRG Collective Agreement.

Position Start Date: 14 August 2017. Interviews will be conducted until a suitable candidate is found.
